A LEAWOOD NATIVE

Hi, I'm Mitch Lohr, and I'm running for Leawood City Council because I want to help my hometown continue to thrive not just today, but for generations to come.

Growing up just around the corner from Leawood Elementary and Middle Schools, I remember walking to and from them every day--rain, snow, or sun! After graduating from Blue Valley North, I left Kansas to pursue my education and begin my career, always with a thought in the back of my mind that coming back to Leawood could be what I truly wanted.

Today, my wife and I live in the same house I grew up in, raising our family in the city that shaped me.

A BROADER PERSPECTIVE

After high school, I attended the University of Arkansas, where I joined Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and earned my Bachelor's degree in History with a Minor in Business. I later received my Master's degree with distinction from DePaul University in Chicago, where I was honored with multiple awards for my work as a scholar and academic speaker.

I've had the privilege of living in vibrant cities across the city, including Chicago and Washington, DC. That experience gave me not only a unique, broader perspective, but an immense appreciation for what makes Leawood such a special community.

HANDS-ON GOVERNMENT EXPERIENCE

My career in public service began in Washington, DC, where I worked in the U.S. House of Representatives. From day one I helped constituents navigate federal services and ensuring their concerns were directly addressed. Then, as a member of the legislative team, I wrote speeches, press releases, hearing questions, policy memos, and actual bills that passed the House of Representatives.

As a legislative staffer, I worked on a wide range of issues, including education, energy, postal service, natural resources, and environmental protection. I also supported the congresswoman's work on the influential Energy & Commerce Committee, particularly within the Environment & Climate Change Subcommittee. I prepared questions directed toward  high ranking government officials on issues that affect everyday Americans.

In Washington, DC, my priority was making sure our constituents were heard and their opinions were reflected in the impact that we made. I also learned the importance of coalition building. I frequently worked hand in hand with community activists, advocacy organizations, and offices on both sides of the aisle to create real, bipartisan solutions.

A PASSION FOR PRESERVATION

Upon leaving Capitol Hill, I began working for the American Battlefield Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields. As the state and local relations lead, I advocated for preservation and education funding at the state and local level. I also worked closely with communities to protect public land and historic spaces, seeing firsthand how thoughtful stewardship and civic collaboration can create a lasting impact.

While in DC, my passion for history led me to volunteer with the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, where I engaged and educated visitors of all ages and backgrounds. I now carry on that effort as a volunteer with the National World War I Museum & Memorial here in Kansas City.

COMING HOME

When my wife and I decided to start our family, we both knew there was no better place than home. And when we had the opportunity to move into my childhood home, it was a no brainer!

Since moving back, I've reconnected with old friends and neighbors, attended community meetings, and become involved in civic life. I've gone to more committee and City Council meetings than teenage Mitch could ever imagine, but it's with a new passion and vigor for making our community even better for my son and future generations.

I've even been fortunate to work closely with elected officials in Leawood and Johnson County to gain their perspective on how best to serve our community.

WHY I'M RUNNING

Leawood is a city with narrow boundaries, but boundless potential. Our neighborhoods, parks, and quality of life aren't by chance. They're the product of careful planning and deep civic pride. I want to help preserve that legacy while preparing for the future--ensuring our growth is mindful, our infrastructure is strong, and our families feel supported.

With deep local roots and federal government experience, I'm ready to bring energy, perspective, and purpose to City Council.

I'm running to give back to the community that gave me so much and help ensure that Leawood continues to be a place where my son and future generations can live, thrive, and call home.
